Castello del Nero: experience authentic Tuscany in a 12th century castle

Many prestige immigrants have chosen to live, work and retire in an area of Tuscany which is among the most well-known abroad: Chianti or Chiantishire, a neologism born due to the massive presence of British inhabitants, includes the emerald hills between Florence and Siena provinces, where the famous wine Chianti Classico and many of the Super Tuscans are produced. No wonder travelers from Italy and from other countries can’t miss the chance of getting lost on the narrow country roads connecting the Tuscan medieval villages, crossing vineyards and olive tree groves. Towering on this inspiring landscape, Castello del Nero Hotel and Spa is the perfect place for an exclusive rest.

Celebrated by Forbes as one of the finest resorts in Chianti, Castello del Nero was the historical residence of the noble families Del Nero and, later, Torrigiani. Built in the 12th century the Castello preserves all its charm: still today is possible to admire original frescoes, fireplaces, vault ceilings and the coat of arms of the Del Nero family, representing a rearing greyhound. The private chapel and the clock on the main tower were built in the 18th century, while the magnificent Italian style garden which welcomes the guest at the entrance was created a century later. As the Del Nero family went extinct, the Torrigiani (another great Florentine family) took over the estate. Carlo Torrigiani and his American wife Anna Frey, a Red Cross nurse, put a special effort into enhancing the Castle activities as a farm. Anna loved her new home at the point she requested to be buried in the chapel. The complete restoration of the hotel ended in 2006. Due to its undeniable cultural importance, the estate (750 acres) is under the tutelage of the Italian Fine Art.
